10 tips - how to create a successful business blog

25 January, 2022

Every year, Navigator selects the country's best company blogs in our annual competition Sweden's Best Industry Blog. The winners are all in different industries but they all have one thing in common - they run a successful company blog that helps them become knowledge leaders in their industry. But how do you actually create a successful business blog? We give you 10 valuable tips!

1. Find a clear niche

For your blog to stand out and attract readers, it is important that it has a clear niche, a distinct focus that makes it unique. What is your company an expert in? What sets you apart from your competitors? Start from your areas of expertise and find a focus that feels interesting, unique and exciting.

2. update the content regularly

No one will choose to return to a blog that is never updated. In order to create a successful blog, it is important to regularly update it with new posts. A good rule of thumb is to never let more than a month go by between posts, but of course you can update it more often than that.

3. Vary the content

To keep a blog alive and create an interesting flow, it is important to have a variety of posts. Even if your blog has a clear niche, you can still vary the content. Mix short, light-hearted posts with longer, more complex ones. Do interview reports or write concrete instructions. Only your imagination sets the limits.

4. Give more writers a voice

To increase the frequency of your posts and personalize your blog, it can be useful to have several active writers. Let your staff take turns writing posts related to their areas of expertise. This way, the blog becomes a living part of the whole business.

5. Write with the same tone of voice

Even if your blog posts are written by several different authors, it is important that the tone of the text is the same. Think about your company's tone of voice and make a list of do's and don'ts. For example: Do we use slang or technical language? Do we write you or you? Do we express ourselves personally or formally?

6. SEO personalize your content

For your blog to get a lot of traffic and readers, it is important that it is visible on Google. By SEO-ing your texts, you increase your chances of being seen. Choose a keyword for each post and try to include it in your headline, preamble and subheadings. Also, remember to create a unique meta description for each post and give your images alt texts.

7. Engage with media mix

Make your blog more lively and interesting by adding different types of media content to your posts. Mix still images with moving content such as movies or gifs. Get extra creative by recording audio clips in the form of podcasts or gathering useful information in downloadable e-books.

8. Simplify with filtering

As posts are published, your blog will be filled with more and more information. To make it easier for visitors to find their way around your posts, it can be a good idea to equip your blog with a filtering function. Tag your posts with relevant tags that visitors can then filter by.

9. Share the posts on social media

A successful blog is a blog with a lot of readers and to get traffic to your blog, it is important that the industry knows it exists. Make it a habit to always share your blog posts on social media, this way you will promote your blog and hopefully get more readers.

10. Have fun and be generous

Emotions are contagious and your readers will quickly recognize whether the content of your blog is created out of desire or compulsion. Have fun blogging and see it as a platform for inspiration and creativity. It's about sharing knowledge and being generous. Offer yourself and your business!
