UX and UI - putting the focus on the user
User experience and user interface, or UX and UI as we more often encounter them, are about making the user experience and usability as good as possible. UX and UI are a natural part of all our communication projects.
What is UX?
The goal of UX is to increase the usability of a product by improving usability, accessibility and experience in the interaction between user and product. At its core, UX is about creating value for the user by creating a product that is attractive, accessible, easy to learn and remember for the next use. It should be easy to navigate, fun to use and create a desire to use again.
What is included in the UX process?
UX design is a broad concept that includes many elements, and overlaps with many of our processes. But the five big parts of UX Design are:
- Research and strategy. To make smart decisions, we need to know who we are designing for, what their needs and goals are. In what situations and how they will use the product. Therefore, research is an important part. Techniques and tools used include personas, customer journeys, surveys, interviews and data from Google Analytics.
- Wireframes are used in the structural work for a website or digital solution to be developed. They are rough sketches of what different pages should look like and how the flow between different pages should work. Does the structure and layout guide the user in the right direction? Is it clear which areas are clickable? are examples of questions that you try to answer in this phase.
- Microcopy or UX-writing as it is often called in UX Design often includes texts that support the user and lead them to the goal of a website.
- User testing to see if the interaction works as intended, or if something needs to be tweaked to make it more understandable and useful.
What is UI?
UI design means designing interfaces for machines and systems to make them as user-friendly as possible. As with UX, the goal is to make the user experience as simple and efficient as possible. However, UI focuses on the aesthetic aspects and simplifies for the user through color, shape, contrast, images, icons and fonts. In short, UX is analytical, while UI is visual.
What is included in the UI process?
- Design research with a focus on trends, standards and finding the right feel.
- Visual design includes shape, color, images, typography, animations and interactions such as buttons and forms. We develop and agree our sketches with the client, often making several iterations.
- Developing design templates for websites and other digital solutions to create a consistent experience.
