Navigators AI School: We test Jasper AI
Have you been thinking about trying AI but don't know where to start? Don't worry, in our AI School we explore and evaluate the industry's leading AI tools. In today's article, we're testing Jasper AI, a program that lets you create finished texts in just a few minutes.
Navigators AI School
To make it easier for you as a marketer to navigate the AI jungle, we have developed Navigators AI School. A series of articles where we examine the industry's leading AI tools. How do they work? What should they be used for? And above all, are they worth learning? In the inaugural AI School article, we take a closer look at Jasper AI, a tool for copywriting and content.
This is Jasper AI
Jasper AI (formerly Jarvis AI) is a writing and content creation tool. Using machine learning, the program creates texts that are similar to those of a human. The program is aimed at marketers and includes a large amount of templates to help the user create specific content such as blog posts, ad headlines and email subject lines.
In this article, our copywriters Klara and Mikael test the program and share their impressions. Stay tuned!
Our first impression
The first thing that greets us when we visit Jasper.ai is a large purple box that presents the benefits of the program. Scrolling down, texts such as "15 types of content in 15 seconds" and "10 000 happy customers" appear on the screen. The site feels modern and cool, but also very American. As copywriters, however, we can't help but wonder, is this the tool that will revolutionize our everyday lives?
Registration and start-up
We sign up and register our credit card. Jasper offers a 7-day trial period before the first payment is made (400 SEK per month). Once inside the program, we feel a bit confused, what should we do now? We are greeted by a white dashboard with lots of inputs but no apparent guidance on where to start.
After a while, we find the "Create new content" button in the right corner. We click and select the option "new from template" and suddenly lots of inputs appear on the screen. We can choose to create content for blogs, social media, ads and emails, among others.
Test 1: Text to social media
Since we both work a lot with social media, we choose the "Facebook Ad Headline" option. We are greeted by a new box where we are asked to enter the product name, product description, target audience, tone of voice and a headline example. We fill in the information and click generate.
The site flashes, and we get three headline suggestions that are actually quite okay. We click again and soon Jasper gives us three more suggestions.
Our first test with Jasper feels good. Some of these headlines we could actually use in a real Facebook post.
Test 2: Text for blog posts
We are keen to try more and this time we choose "One-shot Blog post". According to the description, we can create a complete blog post with a preamble, body text and conclusion. This sounds almost too good to be true? We click in immediately!
Inside the template, we are greeted by a similar box as before where we are asked to fill in the topic, tone of voice and target audience. We think of an idea for a blog post that would fit on the Navigator blog and fill in the information.
Once the information is filled in, we click on generate and within seconds a blog post of almost 500 words has appeared on the screen.
We read through the blog post. The language is perfectly acceptable, we detect some grammatical errors but it is clearly readable and understandable. The facts presented about WordPress are correct and the text contains several of the CMS's best-known advantages.
Overall, the blog post is good, but perhaps not good enough to be copied and published directly on the Navigator blog. Some tweaking is needed to make it feel alive and personal, but we both agree that it works well as a first draft.
Test 3: Name for new product
We're getting used to the program and understand its features better and better. We decide to put Jasper to the test and try something more advanced. We go back to the templates and select "Business or product name".
We are greeted by the familiar box and fill in information about a new product we just came up with; a coffee cup that refills itself.
Up to you Jasper! We click on generate and are greeted with the following suggestions:
"Coffee holder", "Refreshing cup" and "Fill up your Joe". Well Jasper, maybe this is not quite what we were looking for. We try changing our prompt and our settings but the results are similar. Half-baked names that don't feel right at all. Good thing, we think, this copy assignment can't be taken away by AI - yet.
Reputation
Jasper is a powerful tool with many features. The program is nicely designed and after a quick test run, it's pretty easy to understand how it works. The templates are numerous and you can quickly create everything from blog posts to social media captions and SEO headlines.
We find that Jasper works best for shorter texts such as headlines and captions, while longer, in-depth texts can easily become stilted and impersonal. We wouldn't dare publish texts from Jasper directly without correction, but to get a first idea or create a structure, the program works very well. Jasper probably works best in English, but the Swedish language does not lag as much as we first thought.
Benefits and advantages
- Large number of templates
- Collecting current facts
- Easy to learn
- Stylish interface
- Works best for shorter text
- Good for idea generation and start-ups
Disadvantages
- Sometimes slow and buggy
- No clear onboarding
- The linguistic sense is missing
- Weak on "creative copy"
- Available only in paid version (about 5 000 SEK per year)
Final rating
A great and comprehensive tool for those who really want to explore AI and content. Best for idea generation and shorter texts, but with a little patience and effort it can also work well for longer texts. Expensive but definitely worth the investment if you have the time to get to know the program and use it properly.
